ABSTRACT

This study aimed to provide more precise conclusions about the effect of selenium as a feed additive on the blood parameters and antioxidant activity in dairy goats using a meta-analysis method. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, selecting studies published from 2005 to 2023 that examined selenium supplementation in dairy goats. Using R software 4.3.3 (2024-02-29 ucrt), data from 16 studies were analyzed using meta-regression analyses. Selenium supplementation in dairy goats significantly enhanced GSH-Px activity (P<0.01), but had no significant effect on blood parameters (RBC, WBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, cholesterol, glucose, and total selenium). Organic selenium, such as selenium yeast, selenium-enriched yeast, selenomethionine, selenium proteinate, and lactate protein complex, was found to be more effective than inorganic selenium after a post hoc analysis between selenium sources and parameters. In conclusion, supplementing with selenium, especially from organic sources, can improve some of the antioxidant status in dairy goats.
