Wood as a source of energy in Pakistan (Current situation and future propects)
K. M. Siddiqui
ABSTRACT
This high dependence on fuel wood for domestic energy in
Pakistan and a majority of population especially in the
rural areas depends upon it. The estimates of annual
demand are very high and most of it is met from tree
grown on farmlands and wastelands; government forests
contributing only a small proportion of wood energy. The
price of fuel wood has risen continuously over the years
due to acute scarcity of the resources. This situation
is expected to continue in near future. In order to plan
for future fuel wood supplies, data base should be
developed through periodic surveys throughout the
country. Further, there may be increasing pressure in
coming years for conservative use of fuel wood through
adopting of ancient cookstoves and its replacement with
more ancient and economic fuels to improve environment.
