Early succession on an abandoned field in Peshawar

S.M. Chughtai, Abdus Sadiq and Sardar Hussain Shah

ABSTRACT

The initial stages of secondary succession on an abandoned field in Peshawar were studied. Cyperus rotundus was the pioneer species which dominated the old field in the first autumn. In summer, Conyza bonariensis shared the dominance with C. rotundus. The spring vegetation was dominated by Coronopus didymus. Of the total 45 species recorded in four seasons, only 13.3 percent were found to be exclusively confined to spring season. In the second autumn of abandonment, Amaranthus viridus became a co-dominant with C. rotundus.
